Autism TV Episodes

For parents Steve and Melissa Bundy, parenting their teenage son Caleb who has autism is not easy. Because Caleb is nonverbal, his parents must communicate with him through a picture communication board. A simple trip to the grocery store may require the assistance of therapist — not to mention a lot of prayer for Caleb to remain calm during the shopping trip. And then there are the unwelcome stares and comments: people referring to Caleb as “retarded” or criticizing Melissa’s parenting. But Caleb does not have mental delays; rather, Caleb learns differently. And Melissa and Steve love and care for their children with all their heart and strength.

In a society that is quick to judge and at times slow to take action, it’s important that Christians dispel the myths and reach out to families like Steve and Melissa’s — because, there are many. The CDC estimates that about 1 in 68 children have been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which accounts for millions of American families affected by this disorder. They are your neighbors, your church friends, the woman at the hair salon and the little boy at your son’s school — all of them with autism or with a diagnosed relative at home. So take a few minutes to watch this short video about what it’s like to have a child with autism and then share it with others through Facebook. The more people become informed about autism, the more opportunity there is for empathy and understanding.

There’s a lot to learn about the autism spectrum disorder; it’s why we’d like to invite you to visit our Help and Resources page on this topic. There you’ll find Joni and Friends TV episodes and radio programs, as well as a list of organizations that serve the autism community.
