When you feel like a “burden”

When you feel like a Happy New Year! And no, I do not mean it as a cliché — I really do pray that this new year will be one of God’s abundant blessings for your life … blessings of joy, peace, hope, and increased strength and trust in the Lord. I know I need it! With my age and almost 50 years spent sitting in a wheelchair, life isn’t getting any easier. And it’s likely you, too, struggle with your own challenges: arthritis that makes your work harder, a son who has drifted away from the Lord, a marriage that has more “lows” than “highs,” or a letter from a collection agency over unpaid bills. Like me, you probably feel you don’t want to be a burden. But the truth is we can’t do it alone; we can’t juggle life’s hardships without Jesus — and without the help of community. It’s why I poured out my heart in an article I wrote last year for Today’s Christian Woman (TCW) online magazine, titled “The Beautiful Truth about Being a Burden.” And I am so honored that this article just “won” special recognition from the staff and writers of TCW as one of the “Best of 2015.” Because it’s a message that we all need to hear. Friend, do not rob someone of the opportunity to bless you, to help you carry your burden. Reach out to a Christian friend, a counselor or pastor (or email us with your prayer need). It’s the best way we can be a living demonstration of the power of God made great in our weakness (2 Cor. 12:9).
