Javier with his motherJavier receiving a wheelchair from Wheels for the World

In Cuba, 9-year-old Javier and his mother came to a recent Joni and Friends Wheels for the World outreach in need of a wheelchair and left with much more. Wheelchairs are very expensive and difficult to get. As a wheelchair for Javier was custom fit for his body by our volunteer physical therapist, Javier smiled and told us, “I’m very happy you’re giving me a wheelchair… I feel so special!” As Javier’s mother watched, she was filled with joy for her son. “This wheelchair is a gift from your Heavenly Father,” we told her. Immediately she crumbled in tears. “I am so alone… there is no one I can turn to.” Maria and Javier heard the Gospel and were introduced to a pastor. A connection was made with a local church and Javier and his mom will now have a Christian community to support them and show them the love of Christ. Your gifts of a wheelchair and a Bible are changing hearts, minds and lives—in Jesus’ name.
