A Servant's Heart

Kay volunteering at Joni and FriendsKay Norris remembers when Joni and Friends was a tiny start-up ministry occupying two cramped offices in Van Nuys, California. The year was 1982 – the same year Kay began volunteering. “I realized right away that Joni was the beginning of a movement, a ministry that would change lives and change the world,” says Kay. “It’s a dynamic and loving ministry that has changed my own life just by being close to it.” Today, retired from her teaching career, Kay still faithfully arrives every Monday morning at the International Disability Center to volunteer in the place she loves so much. For 30 years she’s put her special touch on almost every department of the ministry, using her organizational skills to keep the wheels rolling smoothly. “Through my years at Joni and Friends, I’ve learned to love people because they are God’s creation. No matter how different we all are, each one is made in His image.” One of the most important ways Kay serves at Joni and Friends is through prayer. “When I pray for people with disabilities, I know I’m right where I’m supposed to be, doing what He wants me to do. Prayer not only changes circumstances, it changes me! I have grown so much through the years at Joni and Friends… loving people is the most important thing!”

Dear Kay, It is a very precious thing to serve JAF for such a long time. In eternity we also have work to do in serving Christ in the new heaven and the new earth. And this earth is the place to prepare ourselves for this.

Thank you Kay, for your commitment and the role model you are, encouragement to pray and love others as a priority.I'm glad you've been there to help Joni from the beginning. Her Godly wisdom has given me a boost (on radio or email) daily for many years, along with helping me teach the 5th graders about God's compassion and plans for our lives. You are part of why she is able to do that. Blessings and hugs, Kay.

Thank you so much, Kay, for all of your loving acts done in Jesus' name for this ministry. The ministry has touched my family and special needs' daughter - sustaining us in our time of grief at her passing and sending her chair somewhere where it can be used to God's glory. You are an inspiration and I am thankful for your loving heart that sees God's glory in people others might miss. I thank God for you today.
